Malta is an island nation of Southern Europe. It’s official name is the Republic of Malta. The country covers an area of 316 km², with a population of about 450,000 people. Malta is one of the smallest countries in the world. However, this island nation is in the top 5 of the world's best healthcare services, ranked by WHO.
Malta has a strong public health system. The health service here is free of charge for all Malta residents and any European citizen with European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The island nation owns many high-class hospitals and the largest hospital is located on the island of Gozo.
In addition, Malta also has a wide network of clinics and pharmacies, offering a variety of health care services. Because of its relatively small area, most people here can access medical services easily.
Malta has 2 private hospitals, located on the main island with full medical examination and treatment services. Services here are varied from the simplest, like blood tests to complex surgical services. All of the services are available at these hospitals. Hospitals are equipped with modern medical equipment, such as 4D ultrasound, comprehensive digital radiography system, laser surgery equipment, MRI machine, CT scanner, etc.
Patients who are not citizens of Malta must use private insurance every time they seek medical care. However, many foreign tourists who have been treated in Malta are sympathetic to the health care services and satisfied with the cost of the services. Most of them consider the medical services here not inferior to any other country, but the cost of treatment is much lower than in other countries.
Many Malta and European citizens are also gradually using private insurance instead of free medical care through basic insurance because the price is quite reasonable. Besides, the private insurance coverage includes more doctors and more diverse services than basic insurance. At the same time, owners of private insurance reduce a lot of waiting time for medical services.
The cost of medical treatment and medicine in Malta is much cheaper than in the US, however, you can save even more by choosing basic insurance. With this insurance, you pay only a small fee. For example, a home doctor service costs only $20, while a premium service starts from 65 USD. An MRI scan costs about $200 but in the US costs up to $1,500.
Medicines in Malta are also much cheaper than the US, such as asthma drugs only from $3.5 compared to $50 - $100 in the US. A box of antibiotics for a week of treatment in Malta costs only about $20.
The Government of Malta not only cares about its citizens through health policies but also has priority policies for its citizens such as economic, social, educational and tax policies. Because of these reasons, Malta is considered one of the best island nations to live in the world.
